The third highest mountain in the world, Kanchejunga is also known as the ‘Five Treasures of Snow’ because of the peaks, four amongst which is over 8,450m. These five treasures represent the repositories of God, which are gold, silver, gems, grain and holy book. With an elevation of 8,586m. It is located along the India- Nepal border of the Himalayas. The Kangchenjunga region was a restricted area until 1988 and ever since the government started issuing permit for expedition, trek and mountaineering there has been hordes of enthusiast who travel to soak into the beauty and the spirituality of the mountain.

The name Kangchenjunga is derived from Sanskrit. ‘Kanchana’ meaning gold and Ganga is the river that flows in the region. The adherents of the region consider the mountain sacred.

The Kangchenjunga region is home to many globally significant plants such as rhododendrons and orchid and many endangered animals such as snow leopard, Asiatic black bear, red panda, Himalayan musk deer and many more.

Great ridges running roughly due east to west and north to south, forming a giant X, buttress the huge massif of Kangchenjunga.

Along the trail one can see many villages dotting the hillsides. Here one can notice a remarkable form of human civilization. The inhabitants who have been living in this region are – The Sherpa’s who are perhaps the most famous ethnic group due to their proximity to Mt Everest. The Limbu’s who are the descendents of Tibetan migrants. Rai who are in several ways similar to Limbu’s and are one of Nepal’s oldest ethno-linguistic groups and the Lohmi’s who are also known are also known as ‘Kar Bhote’.

A journey to Rara lake is one of the most incredible and fascinating treks in all the Himalayan range lie northwest of Kathmandu in the remote area of Karnali. If you are looking of wilderness and solitude travel, this trek is an ideal choice. The route is very much ‘off the beaten track’ and affords glimpses of cultures and scenery very different from the rest of Nepal. The clear, high altitude lake of Rara, which mirrors the snow capped Himalayas is ringed with blue pine, black juniper forest and Himalayan cypress Lake Rara is a popular serenity pilgrimage for Nepalese. In summer rainfall is low, and ideal for trekking. In the winter there is often snow on the ridge surrounding the lake, in the autumn season trekkers are rewarded with a profusion of alpine flowers. Rara Lake is five kilometers long and two kilometers wide and is the largest lake in Nepal. The national Park is one of the best places in Nepal to see wildlife: musk deer, leopards, ghorals, tahr, Himalayan black beer, and the rare red panda are all native. The park is also a bird watcher’s delight, especially during November and April when many species of birds visit during their seasonal migration.

Rendezvous with the most enigmatic and less developed district in Nepal, itself reveals the significance of Upper Dolpo Trekking region. A hidden trekking destination speaks volumes about its outstanding tranquil beauty, relatively unexplored and beholds extreme landscapes of the highest quality. Also known as a land beyond the Himalayas instantly evokes a vision of mysterious monasteries, extinct wildlife species of snow leopard and blue sheep. The Dolpo region is largely an isolated which has been strictly off-limits until recently opened in 1990. Dolpo region is sandwiched between the Tibetan Plateau and the Dhaulagiri Himalayan range is the highest inhabited land of Dolpo. Often addressed as sturdy highlanders of Dolpo are basically traders by nature, follow the barter system of exchange, and trade barely for Tibetan rock salt and graze their yaks on the Tibetan Plateau during summer.

Upper Dolpo Trekking ideally starts with an instant flight to Nepalgunj and then to Juphal village from where the actual trek starts. We steadily walk through the carved terraced fields and to the Bheri River passing through the narrow canyon and reach other interesting villages and encounter ethnic communities’ valleys and serene forest of pines, oaks and rhododendrons, the trek passes through numerous gigantic mountain ranges and over the Numala Pass at an altitude of 5,400m and reach the Phoksundo Lake at Ringmo Village in the Phosksundo National Park. At Ringmo we are greeted with spectacular glimpses, and we spend couple of days in this exciting settlement, filled with stupendous natural splendor in the form of deep blue waters of the Phoksundo lake and the surrounding snow peaks of Kanjirowa Himalayan range, along with the legendary monastery of the pre-Buddhist Bonpo sect. We move ahead and make way towards the brilliant crystal bounty of Crystal Mountain at thrilling Shey Gomba following the ancient Trans- Himalayan trade route and back to Jhupal for a return flight back to the same route and then to Kathmandu.

Upper Dolpo trekking region also holds its account in Peter Matheson’s book – The Snow Leopard and Snellgrove’s – Himalayan Pilgrimage, along with Nepal’s first English subtitled movie of Eric Valley – The Caravan speaks volumes about hidden natural brilliance of the Upper Dolpo Trekking. Mountain Safari (P) Ltd enables this elusive trekking voyage in to the land of lesser known with safety and pride.

Rolwaling Trekking is generally addressed as the ‘grave’ by the indigenous Sherps’s for its uncanny location-buried down between steep ice-giants lTrekking in Rolwaling is one of Nepal’s finest high mountain valleys West of the Khumhu, Rolwaling Trekking provides a wonderful option to test your adrenaline rush while trekking in the northern regions of Nepal. Rolwaling trekking combines both uphill hiking experiences and crossing of varying landscapes, which includes crossing of one of the highest passes in the world, Tashi Lapcha Pass (5,755m), to enter the Khumbu (Everest) Valley.

The Rolwaling Trekking journey commences from Kathmandu and reaches as far as Dolakha (near Charikot). The trail is well defined and used by porters and shepherds going up to the summer kharkas or grazing pastures at Beding. There was a customs check at Jagat where the climbing permit was vaguely inspected. The last habitation is at Na (4180m). A thrilling encounter is always a possibility up here as it is renowned for sudden snowfall so a great deal of patience is required) which also invariably aids acclimatization). The Tsho Rolpa is an awesome ice lake held back by terminal moraine. The unmarked route goes along the Trakarding Glacier, and then climbs steeply up onto the Drolambau Glacier. The scenery is tremendous every inch of the way!On the east side of the glacier is a range of mountains well over 6000m. The Teshi Lapcha La goes through these mountains by the footslopes of Patchamo. The descent on the other side is steep and very rough through boulder fields. Sometimes the trail is difficult to find until you reach Thyangbo Kharka, a very lonely dwelling on the route to Thame, and thence on to Namche Bazaar. This marks the end of our long snowcapped journey, and we head back to Lukla for a return flight back to Kathmandu.

Rolwaling Trekking is a combination of strenuous and a breathtaking picturesque trekking experience, into the glacial high passes and varying landscapes. Trekking in this region is unforgettable experience worth trying and believing in you. Create history with Mountain Safari (P) Ltd by venturing out into the wildest of glaciers once in a lifetime.
